齋戒能使人免於火獄，因為齋戒能夠抑制我們的欲望，而環繞火獄的正是無邊的欲望。如果一個人能夠在今世掌控自己的欲望，他就會在後世免於火獄的刑罰。

Fasting is a protection from the fire because it is refraining from desires, and the fire is surrounded by desires. If someone refrains from the desires of this world, he is protected from the hellfire in the hereafter.”
